Coming up:
- The Big Fun Run: (http://www.bigfunrun.com/
- Weekend away: 4th-6th Nov, Isle of Arran. We’re going for two nights, arriving on the Friday to do our sponsored walk up Goat Fell on the Saturday, followed by dinner and wine! On Sunday, people can leave in the morning or afternoon, but I personally will be leaving in the afternoon to leave time to head to the chocolate shop and the Cheese Experience! Price wise, accommodation will be £25 for the two nights, and return transport will be around £18. It’ll be a great fundraiser and a brilliant way to get to know each other more. - Hot-dog stand outside Cheesy Pop: This is a fundraising idea we’ve wanted to try for a while- selling hot dogs outside Cheesy Pop (the QMU’s Friday club night) as people are leaving at the end. Other societies have done this successfully and so we’re keen to give it a go, so will discuss it more in meetings.
- Protect the Human club night at Stereo, Thurs December 1st: Owen in the group is running a club night in aid of Amnesty- he spoke to us about it at last week’s meeting and is wanting volunteers to give up a couple of hours to PR the event around campus. It will be a great night- dancing in aid of Amnesty!
- Christmas caroling: We are determined to make this happen this year! Whether you can sing or not we’ll muddle through lots of carols in a public place and raise tons of money!
- The Secret Policeman’s Ball is confirmed for Saturday 4th February in Qudos- very exciting! Billy Kirkwood is confirmed as our compere and in the next couple of months we’ll get going on a big publicity drive- there’s lot’s to do! This annual night of comedy has been more and more successful over the last couple of years, raising thousands of pounds for Amnesty, and we want to make this one the biggest yet!
- Please tell us if you’re keen to organise something, or have a fundraising or campaigning idea.
If you’ve not been to meetings so far, please come along- newcomers are always welcome. Our next meeting is in QUDOS at 5pm in the QMU.

Hello GU Amnestiers!
Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend. Was great to see so many back on Tuesday- and to have so much more space in Qudos was such a delight! We’re back in Qudos, 5pm on Tuesday in the QMU. After the vote on campaign areas last week, the two which came out on top were human rights in Burma and women’s rights, so these will be our campaigns for the next few weeks!
This week we’re focusing on women’s rights. We’ll have three areas set up; one on women in Afghanistan, one on women in Iran, and another dedicated to banner making for all the arty types! There’s loads of information on the AI UK website:

Also, we’re having our second social at The Common Rooms straight after the meeting. Please come along for drinks and FREE FOOD!!

- TOMORROW! World Day Against the Death Penalty on Monday 10th October: ACTION ON LIBRARY HILL 11-3PM. We’re doing a visual action tomorrow, holding placards with death penalty prisoners’ names on library hill leading up to a table with a petition. - This Wednesday, 12th Oct, there is a film screening in The Arches about women’s rights in South Korea. The tickets are £2, and the lady who is running the night is coming to the meeting on Tuesday to tell us more about it.

Hi everyone! We’re back in committee room 1, 5pm in the QMU tomorrow. We’ve got loads coming up in the next few weeks so please come and get involved!
After this week’s events- the execution of death row prisoner Troy Davis in Georgia, USA- we’re going to take a look at issues surrounding the death penalty, Amnesty’s work regarding this and take some action on behalf of individuals suffering as a consequence of its existence around the world.
It was great to see so many new (and old) faces last Tuesday, looking forward to meeting more of you tomorrow!

Hello freshers and regular attendees all! We’d love it if you could come along to our first meeting of the 2011-2012 year tomorrow (Tuesday) 20 September in the QMU! This and subsequent meetings will be held on the third floor (take the lift or back stairs) Committee Room 1 at 5 PM. Please drop by and say hello 
Afterwards (~6 PM), we will be heading to the Common Rooms on Byres Road for our first introductory social, so if you can’t make the meeting, please come along for that!

I would also like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to everyone in the group. The year has been hugely successful and we are currently in the lead for the raise-off with a whopping total of £2837.50! Everyone has worked continuously hard and it’s most certainly paid off!
Please note, there will be no more meetings this term. I will send out details regarding meetings for after Easter but as it will be exam period this will perhaps only be one or two to organise our final events of the year.

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that tonight is our AGM. Please come along to either stand for a position or use your vote and ensure we get a good strong committee for next year.

Immediately after: 6.15pm, end of term social, Common Rooms, Byres Road, food provided and drinks on tap!
The meeting will run as follows:
* Opening with presidents review followed by the treasurers report.

Dear Amnestiers,
Firstly, for those of you who missed last weeks meeting, we were joined by Martha Wardrop from the Glasgow Green party. We were able to discuss some of the Scotland specific human rights issues and Claudia has written out a brief overview of her views. See below if you’re interested.
In the coming weeks:
* Tuesday 15th March: The Humanitarian crisis in Gaza: a forum. 5pm-7pm. Boyd Orr, Lecture theatre E (room 611)
* Tuesday 22nd March: AGM – the chance to run for/exercise your democratic right to vote in next years committee.
* End of term social for committee hand over, immediately after the AGM, 6pm, Common Rooms, Byres road.
The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: a forum
Join GU Amnesty International for a formal discussion on this issue. Our Guest Speakers are:
• Greg Philo – Glasgow university Sociology department. Providing background information on the crisis.
• Antonios Tzanakopoulos – Glasgow University Law department. Speaking about international war crimes.
• Kathy Galloway – Head of Christian Aid Scotland. Discussing the impact of the humanitarian crisis.
There will then be an opportunity for questions and discussion – followed by biscuits and refreshments!
Amnesty International believe that the situation in Gaza should be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC), as we call to pave the way for the UN Security Council to make such a referral.
The forum hopes to highlight some of these issues and provide an opportunity to call on the ICC before the next meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council on the 21st March 2011.

Martha Wardrop Overview
Martha Wardrop – a brief (not exhaustive) summary of Tuesday’s meeting
Ms. Wardrop from the Green Party started off the meeting by giving us some background on her educational, volunteering and political life. She is a member of Amnesty International, is involved in Women’s Aid and actively campaigns against nuclear weapons, and particularly against the replacement of Trident.
Among the topics discussed were:
Human trafficking – she mentioned the existence of some organisations in Scotland that deal with victims of trafficking.
Gypsy travellers – Her views on the traveller community were towards the promotion of non-discrimination. According to Ms. Wardrop, the latter can be improved through the media, education, more funding (to, among others, allow for more available sites). She also views as important to give the gypsy travellers priority in terms of available land, instead of selling it to property developers.
Ms. Wardrop is strongly in disagreement with the use of tasers by the Scottish Police force. The possibility of distributing tasers instead of giving police officers adequate training and formation can seriously jeopardise the quality of the service of the police force and banalise violence.
On the issue of human rights, Ms. Wardrop demonstrated her awareness of international human rights violations and explained how the UK should be prepared to tackle these issues, both internationally and domestically as well.
