Guantanamo’s sixth anniversary
November 24th, 2007 by Emma
On the 11th of January 2008, Guantánamo Bay will have been running for six years.
Amnesty International is therefore stepping up its campaign for the closure of the base and the fair and safe transfer of all prisoners.
There are three things that they ask us to do:
Check www.unsubscribe-me.org for actions and demonstrations.
Raise awareness by organising an event. We are running our Unsubscribe stall on the 5th of December, so if anyone is free to help out please let us know and if anyone has more ideas on spreading awareness, don’t be afraid to share.

Unsubscribe is a campaign about terror and security. There is a massive debate around these issues, and sometimes can be very difficult to campaign. Terrorism is a subject that breeds fear. Whether we realise it or not we as a nation, and as a world are living in fear. The security measures undertaken by our Governments, and other Governments across the world are taken in times of fear. How can any measures taken under conditions of fear be deemed responsible actions? Much like confession under torture is void, so too are decisions to use facilites such as Guantanamo. We need a campaign idea that gets across the message that we know terrorism is wrong, and terrorist action is against all human rights, but at the same time showing that the Governments reactions to terrorism so far have also been against human rights. You cannot fight abuse of human rights with further abuses of human rights.
