› Control Arms: "GU Amnesty Supports the Arms Trade Treaty" Photo Petition
153 countries have agreed to conrol arms - now is the time to make it happen
As part of out campaign work on Control Arms, GU Amnesty are conducting our first photo petition. We inform people of the facts behind the Control Arms campaign, and then ask if they would agree to be photographed holding a sign that says "I support the Arms Trade Treaty" (and a cutout of a gun!).
Find out more about the Control Arms campaign and the Arms Trade Treaty on the Amnesty UK website: Control Arms. Also please read controlarms.org, the official Control Arms website.
Some key facts:
- There are around 639 million small arms and light weapons in the world today
- Every minute, one person is killed by armed violence
- There are roughly 2 bullets in existence for every person on the planet
- 1 million weapons are lost or stolen every year
Arms can be used illegally for conflict, repression and crime. Therefore, Amnesty International believes in the implementation of an Arms Trade Treaty that sets out the 5 golden rules, saying that arms should not be sold to countries, groups or individuals where the arms:
- Are likely to be used for serious violations of international human rights law or international humanitarian law
- Have an impact that would clearly increase poverty by undermining sustainable development or involve corrupt practices
- Provoke or exacerbate armed conflicts that are in violation of their obligations under the UN Charter and existing treaties
- Contribute to an existing pattern of violent crime
- Risk being diverted for one of the above outcomes or for acts of terrorism
Below are the people who agree that the Arms Trade Treaty is a step forward in controlling arms around the world.
